A number, the studio in new delhi is on the spot. Last week, the u. S. War area website threw out estimates:BeijingProbably already served about 500. And here in india, five-generation aircraft are a clean zero。
Dozens of hours later, new delhi television brought two retired air generals to the studio with only one title — 500 of them。
How did that figure come out?
Let me be clear: this number is not published by china. China never discloses specific loads of disassembly 20, and all data are extrapolated from open sources outside the country。
How did that come out? By the fuselage number。

German observer andreas ruprecht, who has been following the chinese aviation industry for many years, took a serial number in 2025, indicating the 300th row。
A year later, he gave about 500 judgments based on output extrapolation。
The zone added that this figure was underpinned by the deployment: the s-20 has already appeared in 14 first-line combat units and 3 pilot flight training bases, of which 4 have been replaced with improved s-20a。

Another line came from the royal united military institute. In its report of january this year, rusi calculated that the annual output would be about 120, and that by 2030 the number of china five was likely to exceed 1,000. The united states military observer is more radical: with 18 aviation brigades, 28 per brigade, 504 combat units alone, plus training and standby, close to 600。
It is widely believed that the annual delivery of s-20 is already at this level of 100 units。
These are external calculations, and there is a high degree of credibility, but there is an odd convergence of direction。

By contrast, it is clear why the indians can't sit: the f-22s have only made 187 of them, which have long ceased production; and the u. S. Air force owns about 450 of them, and has to order from its allies. Since the end of the cold war, no country has built a five-generation machine into that volume。
There's another detail that's holding the nerves tight in india. Numerous indian media have mentioned that units of s-20 have been located at highland airports in the direction of tibet, from where they reach the airbase in northern india, just a few hundred kilometres in diameter。
Even worse, these 500 have changed in two years。
First, the heart. The replacement of vortex 15 began with a maximum push of about 18. 5 tons from open sources, with a significantly higher lifetime than the earlier russian-made al-31f。
This level is followed by ultrasound cruises, mobility spares and attendance。
And formation. In 2025, the parades crossed the tianan gate in rows of 16d, 20, 20a, 20s and 35a. In official terms, the equipment under review is the main war equipment in service. Among them, s-20s is a double invisible fighter jet serving in the first part of the world, and the person in the back is responsible for the exclusive command of the drone。

Finally, ammunition. The built-in bomb chamber of range 20 can be mounted with a thunderbolt-10 close range, with a long range of 15 and a longer range of thunder-17。
The invisible platform, coupled with the super-range missile, was forced by the old saying that the first enemy found it and the first enemy fired。
The first reaction on social media in india was the familiar three-set -- "duck wing destroy invisible" engine。
But the two people who were invited to the tv didn't say a word like that。
The general admits it's tough, but only half
The two lieutenant generals, one kapur, who had served as commander of the central command of the indian air force, were retired in august 2024。
The other was darkar, who served as deputy chief of staff of the indian air force from october 2024 to april 2025, previously under the command of the eastern air force command, which was in the direction of china, and as the first director of the indian defence space agency。
Lieutenant general air marshall of the indian air force。
One runs the house, one runs the front line and says more words than those on the internet。

They don't talk hard. The situation is dire, as the years of the decade have seen rapid progress in the integration of engines, radars, sensors and long-range air missiles, and china has not only been able to build them, but has also been building them faster — a directly recognized part of the programme。
But they also gave the other half: the five-generation machine is strong, but not the cloak。
That's technically sound。
Invisibility is never "disappearing," but it's keeping the radar of each other short。
Mipo radar has a natural advantage over the invisible shape, seeing it, but it's not precise enough to guide fire control. So the real solution is a combination of punches: mibo discovery, x-band tracking, data link power, and infrared search tracking as the second eye without an electromagnetic wave。
India is not without cards。
The s-400 air defence system, with the most far-reaching containment range called 400 km, is being refilled with a jointly developed medium-range air defence missile, and the national-produced long-range air defence system "kusa" programme is being advanced。

The real downfall is the "suhoi super" upgrade: about rs. 63 billion, 84 sou-30mki, the core of which is the "hythonous fork" active phase-control radar developed by drdo, with about 2,400 incoming and outgoing components claiming a distance of over 200 km from detection of hidden targets
Complemented by the "gandiva" mk3 impulse engine, an empty missile with a range of over 300 kilometres**。
To put it simply, it's a larger radar aperture and more distant missile that squeezes back the invisible distance。
But it's only half the story. The unspoken half is india's own books。

Number of squadrons: 42, only about 29 at present。
The last two mig-21 squadrons were retired last year, and the six jaguar squadrons will be out before 2032. Five: zero。
Where's amca? It was only in may this year that the ministry of defence of india sent the request for proposals to three private consortia — l&t, tata advanced systems and balat. The first prototype is expected to be rolled out between 2028 and 2029 and will be operational until around 2034。
The most stuck in the neck is the engine。
Prototype machines are initially held against the united states ge f414 and mass production is dependent on international cooperation, with reports that cost negotiations have not been smooth. Even the f404 for "sweet" mk1a has been delivered。
As for the 114 "winds" approved by the defence procurement committee on 12 february, about rs. 3. 25 trillion — four and a half generations, not five。
The equipment list can be supplemented and the production line constructed. But there's one thing nobody can make up for。
The platoon at darwin airport
Just today, 20 july, darwin, australia。
The "black" multinational air exercise opened in 2026, with 19 countries and over 100 aircraft, the largest in its 45-year history, until 7 august。

India's "wind" fighters and c-17 transport aircraft arrived on 17 july。
The indian air force map on social platforms says, "ready, too hard, and stay focused." "to get wind out of this flight, an il-78 refueler takes off from indonesian waters and refuels in indonesian airspace."。
On the same apron, japan brought f-35。
In addition to united states and english, there are japan, korea, singapore, malaysia, indonesia — a training network in 19 countries — which is a sign in itself。

This is the most realistic solution for india at the moment: without a five-generation machine, we fly first with friends with five-generation machines。
The other way is to buy. Russia's been marketing su-57e, promising unrestricted technology transfer. Chairman sounir said in april this year that the russians assessed that half of the existing hal facilities could be used for production, "we are waiting for an investment offer from the russians. "the offer has yet to come, but the bill has become more expensive。
What can be brought back from darwin is radar data, martial law notes, and the pain of being "called."。
These are worth money, but none of them can turn into a hidden fighter。
Deeper gaps, not on the runway, in the workshop。
More than a hundred delivery beats a year, and the delivery rhythm of the 16 scheduled to be completed by march next year, are not the same quantitative industrial capacity. Aircraft can be imported, whether or not they can be imported。

There's a third floor. A lot of people don't count in。
Scratch-20 never works alone。
Behind it is a network of air police series alerters, 16d electronic combat aircraft, drones and data chains. Modern air warfare has long been not a knight's battle, but a system against a system — not the strongest aircraft, but the most difficult net to cut off。
And beyond this net, china is already flying the next generation。
The first flight on 26 december 2024 took place, and there are currently four prototype aircraft
The united states military observer stated on 29 june that it had completed the major mobile subject validation。
The united states f-47 contract fell into boeing's hands only in march 2025, and the first flight by united states calibre took place as early as 2028。

While india's amca was waiting for the first prototype, its opponents were already verifying the next generation。
But this game is just a gameArms raceIt's too narrow。
The ministry of foreign affairs of china stated in june that the situation on the border between china and india was generally stable, that channels of communication were open between the two sides and that preparations were under way for the twenty-fifth meeting of the special representative of the secretary-general on the border, and that china's defence construction was not aimed at any third party。
The border cooled at the negotiating table and the sky opened a gap in the factory — two things that were happening simultaneously。
500, 1,000, and the real utility of the five-generation machine has never been to fly out and fight, but rather to leave the opponent uncalculated and afraid to fight. There will be one sentence: there will be no invincible aircraft。
But there's still a half of them who don't say it — the plane that decides whose sky is not better, and whose factory can hand over another one tomorrow。
