Hear."Sociology“isn't this a social worker?” this is the most common misconception. Social science is not a social worker. Social workers are an independent profession (social work 03002), specializing in social services and community governance. Sociology is the subject of studies on “how society works” - the structure of the population, social relations, social stratification, social change, from the family to the state, from gossip to immigration, from consumer behaviour to collective action. It is a “microscope” that understands people and a “telescope” that foresees social change。

I. Four years of college and what
The core competence of sociology is “the scientific understanding of social phenomena”. The four-year course can be divided into four main sections:
Theoretical foundations: sociological generals, sociological principles, social history of thought, social psychology, social investigation methods - from classical to modern theory, laying down the “framework for understanding society”。
Branch areas: family sociology, organizational sociology, urban sociology, rural sociology, demographic sociology, over-the-counter sociology — each with its own research subjects and problem awareness。

Research methods: social statistics, social surveys, quantitative studies (spss/stata), qualitative research (interviews/participation in observation) - this is the most practical “food skills” to be used for user research by internet companies and for public opinion surveys by government agencies。
Front-line applications: social networks and digital societies, population ageing, urbanization and urban villages, mobile populations and migrants, social security and public good governance — social issues that are at the forefront of the response。

One sentence is very well summarised: sociology is “synthetic, quantitative and serious”. It has to read and write (theoretically) and run data for surveys (practically) and white's most prone to error is to read the theory and not to do field research, but to talk on paper。

Ii. How to select schools in different fractions
The school selection logic in sociology is clear: priority is given to the level of assessment of disciplines (a+/a/b+), followed by the availability of doctoral points in sociology, followed by geographical resources (eastern urban groups and sea culture are very sociology friendly)。
Top level (more than 650 points): beijing university (a+ in sociology, where chinese sociology flourishes), people's university of china (a+ in sociology, where social survey methods are important), reddan university (a in sociology, sea school in social sciences), qinghua university, nankai university (independent structure of the academy of sociology), sakayama university, jilin university, shanghai university. These institutions have a strong theoretical base and are highly qualified, with strong resources for studies, examinations and internet access。

China university of teacher training, nanjing university, zhejiang university, xiamen university, wuhan university, china university of political science and law, yunnan university, south east university, hunan university, china university. It is recommended that priority be given to institutions with a sociology specialization assessment above b+ or to provincial priority universities with doctoral points in sociology。
One level (500-560): priority is given to provincial teacher training universities with doctoral points in sociology-level subjects (e. G., master huadong, master shanghai, master anhui, etc.) or general universities (e. G. Henan teacher training university, shandong university, hainan university, etc.). In teacher-training colleges, sociology often works with local social governance and educational practices, and there are many internships。

What can you do after graduation
Sociology employment can be divided into six main directions, each with its own path and threshold:
1. Party bodies and agencies (approximately 25 per cent): there is a clear demand for sociology expertise at all levels of party committees, civil affairs, statistics, advocacy, women's federations, street offices, etc., and there is a strong degree of stability in the examination for posts. It is recommended that the third year start preparing for the competitive examination and that the sociological “writing merit” be well received in the literature and interviews。
2. Internet and market research (about 20 per cent): internet companies in shanghai, beijing and shenzhen have a high demand for researchers and market researchers from sociology backgrounds. User research, consumer behaviour studies, market data analysis, many jobs explicitly require a sociology/social statistics profession. The start-up wage of between $8150,000 and $1. 53 million over three years and five years is a major export of market employment。
3. Media and think tank research (approximately 15 per cent): in-depth coverage groups in the media such as xinhua, the people's daily, zhao, zhou xinxiang, the institute of social sciences and the university's think tank. This route needs to be studied, and undergraduates can progress, but mostly turn to studies。

Corporate human resources and organizational management (approximately 15 per cent): the sociological “organizational behaviour” perspective is of unique value to hr work, particularly in the areas of enterprise culture building, employee relationship management, organizational change, etc. The organizational development of large enterprises and the culture of the enterprise demand this type of background。
5. Education and higher education (about 15 per cent): political/social teachers in secondary schools, university counsellors, student posts, etc. This route requires studies and studies - teachers in higher education require a doctorate in basic terms, but secondary school teachers and counsellors are undergraduate。
6. Social services and public goods organizations (about 10 per cent): public interest foundations, charities, community service centres, etc. Although modest, there is a strong sense of value for socially sensitive students。

What kind of person
Concerned about people and society is not a “talking” concern, but an academic interest “to understand why people act like this”。
Reading and writing are powerful and willing to read and write long books without rejecting theoretical thinking。
Data are compatible and can be counted, investigated and reported in cold benches. Mathematics requires a “middle bias”: social statistics, sss/stata requires a certain mathematical base, but far less resistant than economics and finance。
I'm willing to go to the grass-roots and field. Social surveys are often rural, community-based, difficult and not suitable for people who simply want to sit in an office。
Sensitivity to public affairs and a desire to think about social issues (e. G. Ageing, urban villages, education equity, migrant rights, etc.)。

V. Current and long-term dialectic analysis
First of all, the plight of the small. Social sciences do not have a clear employment framework like computers and finance, and many recruitment posts do not write “social sciences” and need to find and prove their value. Second, the examination process is serious, with a large number of sociology counterparts, but also a large number of competitors — all in the fields of law, politics, chinese, administration, etc. Third, undergraduate salaries are average, and internet jobs are affordable, but institutional and traditional jobs are not well paid. Fourth, market-based employment requires a high degree of practical competence and is not theoretically sufficient. It must be investigated, data collected and reports prepared。

First, modernization of state governance requires social research talent in the long term — people who need “social understanding” in grass-roots governance, public good governance and digital government. Secondly, the internet era has instead increased the value of social research — the enrichment of algorithms and the need for an explanation of “why”. Thirdly, the demand for social policy researchers will erupt when major social changes, such as ageing, urbanization and mobile populations, take place. Fourth, for those who follow the academic path, sociology remains the cornerstone of the country's humanities and social sciences, with a large number of doctorates, a small annual intake, a concentration of mentors and a high value for money in pursuing the academic route. Fifthly, the capacity of the ai era to “understand people and explain social phenomena” remains unique to human beings, and it is even more difficult to replace sociologists with chinese scenarios。

Sociology is not a “big money” profession, but it is a “understanding chinese society”. Its value is that when others see only phenomena, you see structures; when others see only problems, you see mechanisms. Its employment elasticity, with its institutional, market-based and academic lines, is crucial for the “theory + methodology + practice” three-pronged work done during the university period. The difference between social work is that socio-psychological “research” (to understand why) and social work “practical” (direct problem solving) are complementary but cannot be confused。

Concluding remarks
Sociology is a profession that needs to be “suffering from loneliness”. It won't get you high on graduation, but it'll give you a pair of eyes that understand society. If you have a natural curiosity about why people act like this, if you don't refuse to read and run fields, if you want future jobs not just to make money, but to do something for society — then sociology deserves your serious consideration。
