Most articles on tea flowers because of their slow growth suggest less or no cutting. In fact, this is not true, because modern agricultural technology has increased the growth rate of tea flowers and the pattern of different varieties is very different, and without it being trimmed, it is difficult to form beautiful tree crowns, whose value will be greatly diminished. Based on my experience in growing tea flowers over the years, the following is a summary of the techniques used to trim them:
Methodology/step
1. To make the form, the crown, beautiful and valuable。

To repair the weak branches, retain the strong ones, promote new ones and increase the vitality of the plants. There are many friends who cut the tea before they know the effect of the cut!

Cutting techniques, based on the two functions of the tea flowers and the characteristics of the different varieties, should be applied in different ways:
For fast-growing vertical varieties, such as “red lean precious”, “oriental light”, “big crust”, etc., a “short cut” method is applied to remove about one third of the height from the upper part and to remove from the root the weak branches that cover the light in the middle, with a faster cut down and a slower cut. These varieties should be trimmed to less than one third to one half of the leaves, and the tea flowers will grow at a significantly faster rate in the second year and form beautiful tree crowns。

For varieties that grow generally and slowly and in a better natural form, such as the “eighteen baccalaureate”, the “fonctuary”, the “day goose”, and the “symphony oyster”, it is only necessary to cut the branches that are too fast and affect beauty to keep them evenly consistent with the lengths of other branches, as well as to cut the weak branches of disease, and the uncut health branches should remove the sprouts or buds in order to promote their splits and keep them at the same pace as the trimmed branches。

For softer branches, too big tree crowns and very low heights, such as “five colour tea flowers”, the side branches below the fork in the main pole shall be cut and the crowns shall be trimmed。
The best time for tea flowers to be trimmed is usually the best one month or so before the bud starts. In the southern regions of fujian, jiangxi, yunnan and guang north-east, the option is to trim around the 20 days before the spring festival (i. E. Around mid-january), and in the low-seat areas of the yangtze river basin, before and after the spring festival. Neither the south nor the yangtze basin can be cut prematurely or late, too cold to freeze the plant, and later, if the tea flower is fresh, it can consume large amounts of nutrients and grow seriously during the year。
