By the early 1970s, engineers had oscillators, timers and single-state circuits, but they were not integrated in an integrated circuit. Simulation circuits using separate components are heavy and the existing timer chip lacks flexibility. This changed in 1971, when hans cameron, a contractor for signetics, designed a generic timer chip using only about 25 transistor tubes, several diodes and an elaborate electrical detoxification network。
Ultimately, ne555 should be shipped: an eight-duper-foot formulation timer can produce a single state, a square wave and a trigger by means of a connection. It is powered by a single source, has a strong output level and is resistant to a noisy environment. Once launched, signetics quickly launched a boom in amateurs and industry。

In the following decades, 555 chips have been widely used in many fields, such as led flashlights, electric drives, server tests, pressure oscillators (vcos), tremors, etc. Engineers use it to control relays, play melody, detect pulse loss and ensure the normal operation of the guard dog timer. Its output has reached hundreds of billions, and today’s version of the ccos continues this tradition, while maintaining the mindset of millions of engineers growing up, the cost of doing so has been significantly reduced。

Based on the extraction mode, 555 can be run under one of the following three core modes:
Single-state (single-trigger): the negative pulse of the trigger end will enter below 1/3 of the vcc, place the locker and keep the output high. The capacitor is then charged with electrical resistance, and when the voltage reaches 2/3 vcc, the locker is repositioned and the output drops. Pulse width is t ≈ 1. 1 rc。
Unstable state (free oscillation): the placement of a cap between the ground and the tort 6 (thres) and the control of charge/discharge time by two resistors (ra and rb) will sustain the oscillation. The frequency is approximately f ≈ 1. 44 /(ra + 2rb) x c。
Double steady state (trigger): trig and thres can be used as place/repeat input to enable 555 to be used as a basic storage element or to shake switches。
The ic also contains a voltage control feet, which is used for external regulation or pwm control and provides a 2/3 vcc threshold. If not used, it is usually routed to the ground through a 10 nf capacitor to avoid instability。
One of the most useful design features is its output level. The two-polar output current is about 200 ma, which is sufficient to drive the small load directly, so it became the preferred of low-component mass circuits long before the microcontroller became cheap and widespread。
Despite the simplicity of the simulation, it is still present in the new design because its inclusion is still relevant。
The microcontroller may appear to be excessive, but the 555 chip is a quick, definitive and durable solution that requires only a few passive elements to achieve pulse, delay or scintillation. With the launch of the cmos versions of tlc555 and lmc555, the attractiveness of the chip has expanded to the areas of low power, battery power and orbit-to-orbit swing applications。

There are, of course, trade-offs. Two-polar ne555 may introduce vcc noise peaks because its output is rapidly larger. In addition, it has asymmetric output-driven intensity and represents a minimum of more than 50 per cent of the space under the basic non-stable pattern, although the problem can be solved by the transposition of the rb diodes or by the adoption of other leapfrogging structures。
Nevertheless, for those engineers who used 555 chips from their early childhood to control flashing leds, the chip was described as a model to simulate the elegance of circuits: no solids, no initialization, just a few voltages and a capacitor. And it still has most of the numbers ic wants。
