Samoa is located in the southern hemisphere tropics and has natural benefits suitable for tropical crop growth, but the availability of local agricultural products is inadequate, both in terms of availability and quantity, owing to poor technical conditions in agricultural production and lack of agricultural and labour resources. More than a year ago, i came to this beautiful south pacific island country as head of the sixth agricultural expert group of china for samoa and members of the group of experts, overcoming limited technical conditions, to help improve the productivity and livelihoods of samoan farmers, bearing witness to the fruitful agricultural cooperation between the two countries。
Watermelon, once rare in samoa. The locals said, “there is no watermelon to grow here”, and a five-kilogram watermelon once sold 500 yuan yuan. After a local survey, chinese experts introduced several watermelon varieties on a trial basis, researched local-specific production techniques for large sheds, and succeeded in mapping out a watermelon planting suite suitable for tropical island countries, with a maximum single fruit mass of 9. 86 kg, most popular with local farmers。
Ricky is the representative of the local watermelon grower. His farm, which used to grow mainly conventional field vegetables, such as cabbage, peppers and eggplants, became a model home in 2020, was helped by chinese experts to build conjoined vegetable sheds and mentor him in the testing of watermelons. Watermelons are grown in more detail and are relatively difficult to handle, pollinating, fertilizer and disease prevention. In keeping with the principle of “bringing people to fish”, we go deep into the fields, combining field guidance and theoretical teaching, and impart economically affordable, operational and replicable practical technologies to local farmers without reservation. In addition to addressing the difficult problems of farm-household production, we are also focusing on the development of local agricultural leaders. Vegetable grower dora is locally known as the queen of vegetables. In 2018, she had learned by chance that the china-china agricultural technology project would help local farmers build large huts and provide technical support, and had taken the initiative of seeking help from chinese experts. The group visited dora's farm and found that she had a strong will to develop the production of vegetables for her commodities, making her a project priority. Dora did not fall short of expectations, studied hard and studied chinese technology, and soon her farm was able to produce a high-quality vegetable-scale production capacity, which in turn led the surrounding farmers to join in the demonstration of increased harvests and become a small, prestigious local village for the commercial vegetable industry. Dora was invited twice to china for exchange training, “the smell in china is my most valuable asset and the help of chinese technical and chinese experts has made me what i am now.” dora often says。
Today, thanks to the efforts of a group of chinese experts, china's agricultural technology project (atp) demonstration farms have become one of the largest, most professional and most functional integrated model farms in the pacific islands. The project's cumulative build-up of more than 160 demonstration families in various professions, benefiting more than 10,000 farmers, has contributed significantly to the improvement of samoa's agricultural technology use and capacity for autonomous development, making it a shining business card in china-sa cooperation。
This year is my seventh year of participation in china's external agricultural assistance. From nigeria's high-temperature fields to the haze of the epidemic in ethiopia, to the hot and wet samoan countryside, i and my colleagues stood up to their posts, sowed hope, and witnessed the fruits of china's agricultural foreign aid and paved the way for friendship. The so-called harvest of a single crop, the hard work of agricultural assistance, but wherever it goes, the smile of gratitude and enthusiasm of the local people is the best reward for us. The sweetest fruit is the harvest of the heart。
