Fifty years ago, at a particular stage in the history of the socialist revolution in china, a youth movement of intellectual youth “uphill and downhill” emerged. This movement has become a social problem that has affected thousands of families and has had a significant impact on a generation of young people. According to incomplete statistics, a total of 1,776,000 young people in the country left the city to go up and down the hill (excluding young people returning home). The scale and duration of the campaign is unprecedented。
After all, the question of the rise of knowledge youth to the hills began in the 1950s. In january 1956, the central political bureau of the communist republic of china submitted the draft national agricultural development programme 1956-1967, which began with the inclusion of knowledge youth from towns in agricultural production as “uphills and lowlands”. This formulation has since been retained as a customary term。

In 1964, the ccp zhang jiaguchi city council set up, under the direction of the central and provincial council, the “leadership group for the advancement of knowledge youth from zhang jiaguchi city” under the responsibility of the deputy mayor, comrade li zhong, to guide the work of young people from zhang jiaguchi city in the countryside. On 23 march of that year, 47 people, including the first social youths, cai xinhua, from the western district of zhang jiakou city, settled in a team of western elin commune in the suburbs. On 16 may, the zhang jiakou district convened a congress of young intellectual activists returning to their homes. During the conference, the committee and the office of the special rapporteur received representatives of intellectual youth activists and awarded awards to 23 prominent groups and 41 intellectual youth activists. The 92 urban high school graduates who were invited to the conference also said at the meeting: “respond to the party's call to go where the country needs most”. During the meeting, more than 2,000 statements of commitment were received from secondary school graduates, all of which stated that they should listen to the party and go to rural areas, especially rural areas, where they are determined to work for the rest of their lives。
In march 1965, zhang jiaguchi's knowledge youth had reached 1,316 people in the countryside. To facilitate this work. In may of the same year, the zhang jiaguchi district held a workshop on the integration of young people from urban and rural areas, at which prime minister zhou enlai, deputy prime minister tam qi lin and the secretary-general of the state council issued instructions for the integration of young people from urban areas to rural areas. In august of this year, zhang jiaguchi organized a warm welcome for 120 young people of knowledge to settle in rural areas in zhangbei and suwon districts。
In january 1966, the zhang jiakou region held a second meeting of representatives of young knowledge activists from the countryside. The meeting was attended by 69 representatives of intellectual youth activists and 20 community and team cadres with outstanding work in rural communities. At the meeting, delegates shared their experiences and gains in transforming their own thinking after being uprooted. The meeting adopted a letter to more than 1,800 knowledge youths from rural areas throughout the region and selected 21 icsm representatives to attend the conference of representatives of knowledge youth activists from rural areas throughout the province. Since then, the ruralization of intellectual youth has been halted as a result of the “cultural revolution” campaign that swept the country。

The large-scale movement of knowledge youths from zhang jiaguchi into the countryside began in 1968. This year, the whole country began to learn the theory of “re-education”. Mao zedong has issued “the need for knowledge youth to go to rural areas to receive re-education from poor farmers. In order to persuade city officials and others to send their children who have graduated from junior high school, high school and university to their villages, a mobilization must be made, and comrades from all over the country should welcome them。
At that time, there were a total of 14,070 graduates (i. E., “three seniors”) from 1966, 1967 and 1968 secondary schools in zhang jiakou city. On 5 february 1968, the zhang jiakou regional retrieval council held a working meeting on the integration of knowledge youths into the countryside in the zanhuang district, in order to establish that, in accordance with a predominantly agricultural distributional approach, secondary school graduates from all districts should be placed in rural areas, and the corresponding secondary school graduates from zhang jiakou city should be placed in teams of rural production teams in the districts of zhang jiakou, in order to implement chairman mao's instructions on the advancement of knowledge youths into the countryside. After the conference, all secondary schools were active. The schools met to mobilize the senior and junior high school graduates, and many students wrote determination letters requiring them to go to the rural areas and re-educate the poor。
At that time, all secondary schools in zhang jiakou city had launched a wave of youths with knowledge to go up and down the hill. I remember writing a poem about the exciting scene of the school enrolling in the countryside: "intelligent youths go to the countryside, and chairman mao has issued the order to march! Baegawa to the sea, manmar benteng; under the decree of determination, sign into a row of dragons; before the registration station, the classmates are ready to march!" as a result of the active enrolment of school students, the first group of knowledge youths in my city were quickly identified。
On 30 may 1968, more than 50,000 people from all walks of life in zhang jiakou city organized a gathering in the 5-1 squares to send young people with knowledge to the hills and villages. At the request of chairman mao, a total of 4612 graduates from 1966, 1967 high school and secondary schools in the city were taken up and dressed with red flowers on their backs and settled in batches to zhang jiawon, zhangbei, kangbao, sang yi, uyu county rural and hebei provinces.
