The director of the strategic planning division of the national intellectual property agency (naip) has made a new introduction to the importance of patent-intensive industries in innovative nation-building, as a focus area for the layout of new tracks and the development of new dynamics. Recently, the national statistical office and my bureau issued a joint bulletin showing that the value of patent-intensive industries in our country increased by 18,04 trillion yuan to 13. 38 per cent of GDP in 2024, demonstrating good growth dynamism。
Three specific features were newly addressed, the first being the continued expansion of industry. In recent years, the value added of our patent-intensive industries has continued to rise from 12 trillion yuan in 2020 to more than 18 trillion yuan in 2024, an increase of 1. 41 percentage points in the share of GDP and a steady increase in the pull towards economic growth. At the same time, the capacity of industries to absorb employment has been increasing, with 52. 67 million people employed in patent-intensive industries in 2024, representing an increase of about 1. 9 million over the previous year and playing a positive role in steady growth and steady employment。
Second, innovation is driven by obvious characteristics. Innovative inputs from patent-intensive industries have continued to grow and innovation elements have accelerated. In 2024, r & d inputs were more than 2. 6 per cent, 2. 4 times more than in generic-intensive industries. At the same time, the level of patent output is rising at a synchronized pace and innovation results are emerging. The number of invention patent authorizations per 10,000 employed persons in patent-intensive industries in the last five years has reached 476 — an increase of 66 per year, 10 times the national industry average。
Third, the digital industry is prominent. The share of the digital economy-related industries in patent-intensive industries continues to rise, with the combined value added of ict manufacturing and ict services of nearly $8 trillion, representing more than 40 per cent of the total. The value added of new equipment manufacturing, medical care, environmental protection and other emerging industries is also rising steadily, reflecting the accelerating pace of high-end, intelligent and greening industrial development in the country。
